Abstract

摘要

Humans are not born with the ability to do most things we learn how to do as adults. With time and practice, we learn how to do them. Our brain keeps evolving and changing as we learn. This evolution is not always as expected. There are neurodevelopmental deficiencies or disorders that refer to deficits or delays in this development. An important example with this type of deficiency is the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) that affects one of 68 children in the US. By studying the stochastic kinematic properties of how we move, we discovered a novel quantitative biomarker with striking neuro-developmental information. This biomarker provides a precise screening tool for ASD with unprecedented accuracy. It applies both to upper and lower limb motions, across different motion tasks. It also gives a remarkable quantitative connection between the way individuals move and their psychiatric scores, e.g., like the IQ. This connection suggests that the motor feature we found may be an essential core feature characterizing not only ASD deficits, but also other neurodevelopmental disorders.
