Effective field theories are generic low energy expansions of physical processes for which a more fundamental, higher energy description is unknown or unsolvable. They rely on theoretical ingredients such as symmetry and renormalization group analysis. In this talk I review the applications of effective field theory in low energy hadron physics, where QCD is not analytically solvable owing to asymptotic freedom.
