In this seminar I will discuss one important insight recently coming out of biology: the general existence of energy-like function in non-equilibrium processes. I will show that this insight helps to resolve the outstanding problem of absence of detailed balance. It will also lead to a few interesting stochastic dynamical equalities which can be tested experimentally. Some related cases in biology will be discussed, too.
