Abstract : Abstract:High order weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) finite difference schemes are suitable for computing solutions of hyperbolic PDEs with both strong discontinuities and complex smooth region structures. These schemes have found applications in computational fluid dynamics and other areas of computational physics and computational engineering, such as in semiconductor device simulations, traffic flow models, and certain problems in computational biology. In this talk we will first survey the basic algorithm issues related to WENO schemes. We will then present several applications of WENO schemes including an application for the simulation of high Mach number astrophysical jets with radiative cooling (joint work with Y. Ha, C. Gardner and A. Gelb), and a hybrid cosmological hydrodynamic/N-body simulation for evolving the self-gravitating system (joint work with L.-L. Feng and M. Zhang).
