Abstract

摘要

We give a bird's-eye view of string theory in the tradition of unified theory, focusing on Calabi-Yau compactifications, introducing some rudimentary constructions of Calabi-Yau threefolds.
In due course, we give attempt to give some justification, from a historical perspective, of why string theory.
* This is a colloquium talk, aimed at general audience (especially for maths and physics students). Prof. Yang-Hui He will talk about what unification is and why string theory from a mathematician’s point of view.
