This talk is about topological order in two dimensional media, which play an important role in the quest for realistic quantum devices. In particular we will show how to extend the paradigm of symmetry breaking by the formation of a bose condensate, to topological media. A general analysis is presented and a number of representative examples will be discussed in some detail.
