New Physics beyond the Standard Model

As the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) starts running in 2007, we for the first time will be able to directly explore physics beyond the Standard Model at TeV scale. It is highly expected that at this scale some new physics will appear. Once the new physics fingerprint is revealed at the LHC, the proposed International Linear Collider (ILC) will zero in on the precision test and map out the detailed structure of the TeV-scale physics. Intensive studies have been being performed on new physics and their phenomenology at colliders. In mainland China there are some physicists active on this frontline.
This program emphasizes how Standard Model extensions might show up directly in collider data and be interpreted, and also indirectly in rare decays and magnetic and electric dipole moments and dark matter. Areas to focus on include supersymmetry, string phenomenology, large extra dimensions and alternative approaches, as well as related QCD issues. This program could overlap scientifically and/or in time with one on b-quark physics if that were desirable. There may be a conference associated with the program.
This program will boost and strengthen the interflow and collaboration between Chinese physicists and their international colleagues. Such interflow and collaboration will not only be beneficial to Chinese physicists and their international colleagues, but also be scientifically important and help fill a gap compared to other areas of particle theory worldwide.
There are some uncertainties about the timing of such a program. One factor is that there is already a KITP program on LHC Physics that would overlap somewhat scientifically from February-June 2008. Another is that both Kane and Su would normally have to teach in 2008; while they would try hard make arrangements to be able to spend time at the program that cannot be guaranteed if they cannot find sources of support. Another factor is that the annual supersymmetry and “Planck” and string phenomenology conferences are usually in June and July. On the other hand, it would be easier for most people who teach to come May through August. Of course the Olympics in August are a consideration, too.
