The 7th Peng Huanwu Young Scientists' Forum on Theoretical Physics and Interdisciplinary Studies Successfully Held
The 7th Peng Huanwu Young Scientists' Forum on Theoretical Physics and Interdisciplinary Studies was successfully held at the Institute of Theoretical Physics (ITP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on February 9-10, 2026. Prof. Shan-Gui Zhou, Director General of ITP-CAS, delivered an opening speech.Prof. Bao-Nian Wan (CAS academician)from the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science (HFIPS-CAS) and Prof. Chang-Pu Sun (CAS academician) from the Graduate School of China Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP) gave invited plenary talks.Prof. Yue-Liang Wu (CAS academician), Prof. Bing-Song Zou (CAS academician), together with over 70 domestic and overseas scholars and postgraduates, participated in the forum, conducting in-depth exchanges and discussions on the latest frontier research progress in theoretical physics and its interdisciplinary fields.
Prof. Shan-Gui Zhou extended a warm welcome to all participants present, and gave an introduction to ITP-CAS. The institute adheres to the principles of "Openness, Interactivity, Truth-seeking, Innovation", focuses on the frontiers of theoretical physics and its interdisciplinary fields, and strives to build itself into a world-class center for basic research, a base for talent cultivation and a platform for academic exchanges. As a flagship academic activity of ITP-CAS in memory of its first director, Prof. Peng Huanwu (CAS academician), the forum has been held six times since its launch in 2017, serving as a key platform for academic exchanges and the recruitment of outstanding young talents.
Prof. Wan shared insights into magnetic confinement fusion energy research with Tokamak as the core, while Prof. Sun elaborated on the quantization of macroscopic systems and the practical realization of quantum computing. The two academicians also shared research experience and encouraged young scholars to explore interdisciplinary frontiers with curiosity.
Hosted by Yu-Feng Zhou, Li Li, Pan Zhang and Wei Li in turn, the forum gathered 18 outstanding young scholars from renowned domestic and foreign universities and research institutions, including Tsinghua University, the University of Tokyo, the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics, the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, the University of Bristol, the Weizmann Institute of Science, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Simon Fraser University, the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics, the Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany, the Perimeter Institute, Stony Brook University, Rice University and the University of Amsterdam, with some participating online.
Their reports covered condensed matter physics, particle physics, cosmology, dark matter, nuclear physics, statistical physics, gravitational wave physics, quantum physics and artificial intelligence interdisciplinarity, as well as their interdisciplinary studies, showcasing fruitful frontier research.
After on-site voting and comprehensive evaluation, Dr. Meng-Xiang Lin (Simon Fraser University & CITA), Dr. Wei-Chen Xiao (Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich) and Dr. Hao Zhang (Kavli IPMU of the University of Tokyo) won the "Best Presentation Award". Prof. Shan-Gui Zhou presented the certificates to the winners, affirming their research achievements and potential in the field of theoretical physics and its interdisciplinary studies.
