  • Abstract
Kibble-Zurek mechanism was vastly studied in condensed matter physics to investigate the formation of topological defects during a course of phase transition which is induced by spontaneous symmetry breaking. Various experiments have verified this mechanism in various systems. However, whether the Kibble-Zurek mechanism still works in strongly coupled systems is still unknown or lack of theoretical foundations. Therefore, we resort to the AdS/CFT correspondence, which can holographically study the strongly coupled physics from the weakly coupled gravity. In this talk, I will briefly review our recent work on the holographic applications of Kibble-Zurek mechanism in diverse dimensional systems, in particular 1+1 and 2+1 dimensions. We will see strikingly different natures for holographic superfluids and holographic superconductors. Besides, different symmetry breaking will give rise to different types of defects. In this respect, I will mention our work on holographic kink formation and vortices formation which were resulted from discrete symmetry breaking and continuous symmetry, respectively.
