Traditionally, there was no systematical approach to include the  classical "stringy" effects in the non-perturbative studies.  Therefore, the string effective theories basically do not  distinguish themselves from the pointlike particle model, and  suffer some long-standing problems. In this talk, I will show  that the recent progress on the classification of $\alpha'$  corrections provides resolutions for challenges  such as dS/AdS vacua, big-bang singularity etc.
