Dr. Su Yi has investigated the quantum phases of ultra-cold dipolar Bosons in two- and three-dimensional optical lattices. For a two-dimensional square lattice, they found the supersolid and the striped supersolid phases if the dipole-dipole interactions are, respectively, isotropic and anisotropic in the lattice plane. While in three-dimensional cubic lattices, by tuning the sign of the dipolar interaction, they discovered the layered supersolid phase, in analogy to the layered structure in high-Tc superconductor. They have also obtained the complete phase diagrams for all three cases. Their results indicate that the quantum phases achievable in dipolar Bose gases are extremely rich, and their research may shed new light into the ongoing experimental investigations.
