KITPC was established in June 18, 2006. It’s a platform supported by CAS for international exchange and cooperation, and it’s named after the donation of the Kavli foundation of America. It is one of the 15 Kavli institutes around the world, and the other 14 institutes locate at University of California(two),Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, California Institute of Technology, Cornell University, Technical University of Delft, Yale university, Columbia University ,Peking University, Harvard University, Cambridge University, Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

The establishment of KITPC is the results of the fact that the development of China’s science and technology has got the world’s attention and a great achievement of implementing PKIP(Project for Knowledge Innovation Program)at CAS. Its establishment provides a high-level and long-term platform for academic exchange and cooperation and promotes the theoretical study on theoretical physics and interdisciplinary areas. It will attract top scientists of the world and young talented scientists to visit and do long-term research programs. Its establishment helps increase the international influence of ITP and China’s physics world, makes ITP more open, provides opportunities for domestic young scholars to exchange and cooperation with top scientists of the world, brings international and domestic physicists closely together, and makes ITP an internally competitive and top research center of the world to do research on the very basic and key problem of theoretical physics and interdisciplinary areas.
As part of the ITP’s open progress, KITPC breaks the traditional research mode that universities and institutes do research separately, associates top scientists of home and abroad, and adopts the three driven modes: “people driven”, “program driven” and “problem driven” (3P driven mode) , and fosters interdisciplinary interactions among institutes within the Chinese Academy of Sciences and between universities and institutes.
As the international exchange platform, KITPC has important national and international goals. Nationally, it will coordinate basic research on theoretical physics in China and facilitate interaction between theory and experiment, as well as promote research in interdisciplinary areas among physics and other branches of science. Internationally, it will host international conferences, workshops, summer schools, guest scientist and visitor programs, which will promote the interaction of Chinese scientists with their counterparts in other countries. Through the long-term cooperation, we can help ITP achieve the goal of becoming scientific research center of the international top level, a basis for doing basic research, fostering and bringing up young talents, and a platform for scientific exchange. At the same time, as one of the 15Kavli institutes, KITPC will actively join in all kinds of academic activities and enhance the cooperation of other Kavli institutes.
KITPC will collect proposals around the world. The director of KITPC professor Yue-Liang Wu will organize the academic advisory committee which selects the innovative, internationally competitive, and feasible program, and run the selected program through “program driven” mode.
