The Institute of Theoretical Physics (ITP), founded in Jun. 1978, focuses its research emphasis on the main fundamental research of theoretical physics. It is one of the first institutions authorized by the State Council to award the doctor degrees. It first launched its postdoctoral program in China in 1984. It became the first few “open” institutions of CAS opening to home and abroad in1985. It was chosen by TWAS as the excellent center of the association and cooperation plan in 1993. It was established as the first few trial institutes of Research Base by CAS in 1997. It is one of the first twelve institutions at CAS to implement PPKIP since August 1998. Cross-disciplinary Research Center was established in February 2002. Kavli institute for Theoretical Physics was established in June 2006, and has been running programs since May 2007.In 2008; the “Key Laboratory of the Frontier in Theoretical Physics (KLFTP) at the Chinese Academy of Sciences” was set up; the KLFTP was elected as an “excellent” one in 2009; In 2011, the KLFTP was promoted as State Key Laboratory of Theoretical Physics (SKLTP) by the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Guideline of ITP

With the guideline of “opening up, mobility, competition and collaboration”, on the support of CAS Ministry of Science and Technology, and National Science Foundation, ITP keeps open to home and abroad, gives full play to the physicist, focuses on the international frontier sciences, promotes the development of new discipline, joins the international competition and create an international academic status.

Work closely with domestic physical scientists, do research on the very basic and key problem of theoretical physics, bring up great talents for the nation, and make ITP to be a scientific research center of the international top level, a basis for doing Research Base, fostering and bringing up young talents, and a platform for scientific exchange.
